Gas processing plant construction on Kashagan has begun

08.06.2021

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhsta as part of a working trip to the Atyrau region inspected the implementation of major investment projects in the oil and gas chemistry and engineering industries and launched the construction of a gas processing plant on Kashagan.

Head of the Government Askar Mamin, Mayor of Atyrau oblast Makhambet Dosmukhambetov, Minister of Energy Nurlan Nogayev, Chairman of the Management Board of KazTransGas JSC Kairat Sharipbayev, Managing Director of NCOC Olivier Lazare and representatives of GPC Investment LLP laid a symbolic time capsule for the future generation at the site of the start of construction of the plant.

The processing capacity of the enterprise will be up to 1 billion cubic meters of crude sulfur dioxide per year, from which 815 million cubic meters of commercial and 119 thousand tons of liquefied gas, 212 thousand tons of sulfur and 35 thousand tons of gas condensate will be produced. Commissioning is scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2023.

The investment project meets the purposeful policy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to address the most actual issues of economic development – the expansion of the resource base for further gasification of the country, the development of the gas processing industry and environmental protection.

The construction of the plant solves a number of significant problems, since gas is a deterrent to increasing oil production at the Kashagan field. The additional processing will remove the load and gas restrictions on the Bolashak Gas Processing Plant to use the available oil treatment capacity. This will allow NCOC contractors to obtain an additional volume of oil production of about 8-10 million tons during the contract period of the PSA, and reduce the volume of gas re-injection into the reservoir.

All these measures are aimed at the rational use of the raw material base of the Kashagan field and at improving the environmental situation in the Atyrau region.

During the construction of the plant, up to 2,500 temporary jobs will be created, and about 600 permanent jobs will be created during operation.
